Background

Access and Merit: A Debate on Encouraging Women in Science and Engineering

Essay by Canadian professor F. Mary Williams that describes the debate about the wisdom of interventions to encourage more women to prepare for careers in science and engineering.

 

List of selected papers from the Eighth International Conference of the Gender and Science and Technology Association held in Ahmedabad, India, January 1996. The papers are available for downloading.  Website is hosted by the international non-profit organization Women in Global Science and Technology.

 

Searchable collection from the National Academies Press covering various features of women in the sciences. Some topics include the history of women in science and how to increase participation of women in the sciences.  Most reports can be read online free.

Most recent report released by the National Science Foundation.  This site provides data on the participation of women, minorities, and persons with disabilities in science and engineering education and employment.

European Commission on Women & Science

The Women and Science Unit in collaboration with the Statistical Correspondents of the Helsinki Group on Women and Science and Eurostat have been collecting data on women scientists for nearly 2 years. These pages contain consolidated statistical information from the cross-national perspective for all available years since 1990 on a variety of themes. Also provides useful links to European organizations promoting women in science.

 

Organizations of Interest

 

Committee on Women in Science and Engineering  The Committee on Women in Science and Engineering (CWSE) was established in 1991 as a standing committee of the National Research Council. CWSE’s mandate is to coordinate, monitor, and advocate action to increase the participation of women in science and engineering.

 

Association for Women in Science  The Association for Women in Science is dedicated to achieving equity and full participation for women in science, mathematics, engineering and technology. 

 

Clare Boothe Luce Foundation   The Clare Boothe Luce Program promotes the advancement of American women through higher education in the sciences, engineering, and mathematics.

 

Women in Science and Engineering WISE is a program of the University of Washington designed to increase the recruitment and retention of women of all ethnic backgrounds in science and engineering and to create an academic and social climate at the UW which is conducive to both men and women at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

 

Women in Global Science and Technology  WIGSAT is an international non-profit organization. Its mission is to promote the contributions women make in science and technology for development, and to help NGOs, governments, bilateral and multilateral agencies and women themselves to understand the gender dimensions of S&T and the implications of this for development policy and practice.  WIGSAT provides services in the area of gender, science and technology for development, with a special focus on information and communications technologies. It also acts as a broker or disseminator of information and resources.

 

The Center for the Study of Women, Science, and Technology  The WST Center is based at the Georgia Institute of Technology and links issues in the study of science and technology with those of gender, culture, and society.  The Center brings together faculty and students, addressing issues of gender, science, and technology in research and programmatic initiatives. In key characteristics, the WST Center is interdisciplinary, cooperative in partnerships with students, and collaborative across Georgia Tech Colleges and in alliances with Atlanta-area colleges and universities and Georgia Tech alumnae.

Anita Borg Institute for Women and Technology The Anita Borg Institute is a nationally recognized organization that provides platforms allowing women's voices, ideas and spirits to influence technology.

 

 

Viewpoints

 

Recommendations for Integrating a Gender Perspective in Science and Technology Policies and Programs in the Americas

Initiative that was proposed at the first meeting of Ministers and High Authorities of Science and Technology. on November 11-12th in Lima, Peru.  Proposed by the Organization of American States (OAC) and the Inter-American Council for Integral Development (CIDI).

 

Editorial in the March 27 issue of the Boston Globe concerning the uproar over Harvard president Lawrence Summers's speculative comments about women's intrinsic ability in science.
